Poker Hand Rankings

The following are the rankings of the five card poker hands used in every standard form of poker from best to worst:

1. Royal Flush - All five cards are in order through 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace and are of the same suit.

2. Straight Flush - All five cards are in order and of the same suit.

3. 4-of-a-Kind - Four cards with the same value. i.e four Jacks with one extra card (the kicker).

4. Full House - Three cards with one value and two with another (a 3-of-a-kind and a pair). i.e. three 9s and two Kings. In the case of two full houses the highest 3-of-a-kind wins and if these match then the highest pair is used to decide.

5. Flush - All five cards are of the same suit (but not in order). In the case of two flushes, the flush containing the highest card wins. In poker no suit (hearts, clubs diamonds or spades) receives a higher ranking than the others.

6. Straight - All five cards are in order. Ace can count as either high or low. In the case of two straights the winner is the one with the highest top card.

7. 2-Pair - Two pairs of cards with the same value. i.e. two 5s and two 4s. In the case of two 2-pairs the highest pair wins, if these match then the second highest pair is used to decide and if these match the highest spare (kicker) card is used.

8. Pair - Two cards of the same value. i.e. two Aces. If two people have pairs the hand is decided by the highest pair and if these are the same by the highest kicker cards.

9. High Card - Decided by the highest single card if no other hands can be made.
